The much-anticipated Fitbit smartwatch has been pictured for the first time and, well, it looks a lot like what you’d expect it to – i.e. a slightly better version of the Fitbit Blaze.

The guys over at Yahoo Finance have obtained a couple of renders of the supposed smartwatch (codenamed “Higgs”), showing off a blue-strapped version with a gold bezel and buttons, and one with a black strap and silver finishes.

I’ve written previously how the Fitbit smartwatch is said to be facing delays and the latest Yahoo Finance report backs that up. “It was originally planned for this spring to likely get ahead of whenever Apple plans their normal fall announcement,” a source familiar with the matter told the title. “Fitbit always likes to try and get in front of it.”

The reason for the delays is reportedly “a series of production mishaps.”

“In one of the more final prototypes, the GPS wasn’t working because the antennae wasn’t in the right place,” a source previously told Yahoo. “They had to go back to the drawing board to redesign the product so the GPS got a strong signal.”

There’s also reports that waterproofing the smartwatch is proving to be an issue and that the model that goes on sale later this year might be without one of the key-features of the Fitbit smartwatch’s main rival, the Apple Watch Series 2.

George Jijiashvili, wearable tech analyst at CCS Insight, predicts further problems due to Fitbit planning on doing its own app store. "By going down the smartwatch/app ecosystem route," he told Wareable. "Fitbit will be up against the likes of Apple and numerous major device manufacturers who utilise Google's Android Wear platform. These companies have got vast marketing and R&D resources – making Fitbit's life very difficult."

When Fitbit’s first smartwatch does finally arrive, it will purportedly have a price-tag of around $300. It’s said to feature a 1,000nit, built-in GPS, heart-rate monitoring, contactless payments, music from Pandora and four days of battery life.

Fitbit is also set to launch its first ever pair of Bluetooth headphones alongside the smartwatch, in two color options: “Nightfall Blue” and “Lunar Gray” (pictured above).
